BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT, is working with Microsoft and The Hg Foundation to bring the TEALS program to the UK for the first time. TEALS (Technology Education and Learning Support) is a Microsoft Philanthropies program that supports equitable, inclusive computer science in secondary schools. The program helps teachers, particularly non-specialists, by pairing them with volunteers from industry who can boost subject knowledge in the classroom, enrich student learning, and accelerate the professional development of computing teachers.

What skills and experience do volunteers need?

We’re looking for committed individuals with computer science or IT subject knowledge, including programming, some experience working as an IT professional, and a passion for supporting diverse talent in technology careers. Any experience in the education sector or working/volunteering with young people would be advantageous but not necessary; we provide comprehensive training before you start volunteering in school.

What can I expect as a volunteer?

Volunteering through TEALS is a significant commitment of time and skill that many people have found deeply rewarding. As a volunteer in the UK you are provided with training accompanied by self-led learning to prepare you for working in a school with a teacher. You will collaborate as a small group of volunteers with computing teachers at a school to support the planning and delivery of computing lessons, and receive guidance and support from a dedicated UK program team.

Do I need to live near the school?

It is ideal if volunteers live close enough to be present face-to-face in schools on a weekly basis during term time. However, we know this isn’t always possible. If travel to the school is only feasible on an occasional basis, some schools can accommodate a hybrid approach with volunteers supporting a class remotely some weeks, and in person on other weeks.

How much time will I need to give?

You should expect to give at least an hour a week in class supporting teachers and students, plus a further 15 to 30 minutes per week for lesson planning and preparation. Many schools and teachers will welcome additional time in school if you can offer it.  The planning workload may be higher initially; however, the time spent should reduce as you gain confidence and become more familiar with the class you’re supporting and the teacher’s approach.  This is “term time only” volunteering. Time in school will be predictable across the school year (typically 36 to 38 weeks at most). We recognise that there will be occasions when plans need to change. As part of a team of volunteers supporting a school, you will work with your teammates and the teachers to accommodate changes in availability.

Is there an application process?

If you are keen to become a TEALS volunteer and help a school near you, then you will need to complete a short volunteer application form. Qualified applicants are invited to a short online interview with the TEALS program team, and if suitable, you will be asked to undergo an Enhanced DBS check before being assigned to the school. Online training will be arranged to help prepare you, and we will organise an introductory online meeting for the lead teacher and volunteer team.
