Data centres are a critical part of the modern world, but they also consume a lot of energy. In this event, you will learn what a data centre is, understand the latest trends in energy-efficient data centre design and practice. In particular Reduction And Re-use of Energy in Institutional Data Centres (RARE-IDC). You will learn about Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) and other metrics to understand energy efficiency and the environmental impact of data centres. In this talk the speaker will share their experience of designing and implementing an energy-efficient data centre for the University of Hertfordshire (aptly the venue for this event). This event is aimed at anyone who is interested in learning more about energy-efficient data centres. Whether you are a data centre operator, a designer, IT professional, system administrator or student you will find this event to be of interest. By the end of this event, attendees will have some insights into how to reduce the energy consumption in their own data centres and IT systems as well gaining an exciting insight into how data centres operate and support the apps and systems we use day to day.

This is a Hybrid event. The event will be held in the Forum Lecture Theatre at the University of Hertfordshire as well as Live Streamed on YouTube. Participation in either is free for all interested participants and whie registration is required, booking is encouraged to avoid disappointment.

About the Speaker

Steve Bowes-Phipps AUH MBCS BSc (Hons) is Vice President EMEA Data Centres and Cloud – State Street Bank and Trust and Board Advisor with the Data Centre Alliance.

Steve is a Vice President at State Street Bank and Trust and plays a leadership role in developing and maintaining State Street Digital Infrastructures. Alumni of University of Hertfordshire (and formerly Hatfield Polytechnic), worked at UH over 7 years (2007-2014). Over 25 years experience running Data Centres, 35 years in IT. Worked in Higher Education, IT Consulting, Financial Services, Computer OEM, SMEs and local government. BTEC accreditation to Data Centre Design Professional status. Heavily involved in ‘greening’ IT at a national and international level. Steve is an international speaker, has been awarded several multi-national awards for Data Centre innovation and efficiency. He serves on the Advisory Board of the Data Centre Alliance and contributes to international Standards, sitting on various committees.

Parking advice

Free parking in the multi-storey car park on the College Lane campus is available. Visitors receive 2-hours free parking and the enforcement period is 7am-7pm. Hence, any vehicle parked after 5pm will be covered for free, until the enforcement period ends. No payment is needed nor do you need to register with UH or Hozah (parking management company) to attend this event.
