Cloud Services – can they really change the face of Enterprise IT or is it hype and re-packaging?

Gartner predict that the provision of cloud services will show significant growth over the next three years as enterprises accept the principles of pay per use and multi tenancy, all largely driven by macroeconomic factors and the attractiveness of a more agile, cheaper functionality over bespoke expensive unique services.

But what does this move to flexible access of more standardised services, really mean to organisations? Is it really new technology or just traditional technology with a new commercial veneer? How will organisations maintain their competitive advantage if the IT enablers are commoditised?
