Information Security – Why is it so Hard?

Since the advent of multi-access computer systems and the subsequent rise of the Internet, the power and functionality of information systems has mushroomed beyond all recognition. Far from seeing a corresponding rise in sophistication, information security has at the same time become a major headache, with stories of data leaks and ever more devious criminal activities breaking with monotonous regularity. After surveying the current threat landscape, Philip will examine why the problem of securing our information seems so intractable, touching on both technical and human factors, and will then attempt to suggest some of the ways in which it can be addressed more effectively.
