Digital Audio – Myths and Realities
Thursday, 19 May 2011, 7:00pm - 8:30pm
Mike Barwise, Recording Engineer, Classic Acoustic
The mythology surrounding digital audio ranges from the truly bizarre such as improving the reproduction quality of CDs by marking them with felt-tips or freezing them before playing, to more overtly credible but often flawed arguments in favour of ever-escalating technical specifications, particularly in respect of bandwidth and dynamic range. Much of this mythology has arisen from ignorance of first principles on the part of sound engineers and lack of rigour when performing system testing, but it has been encouraged and maintained by an “audiophile” marketplace that promotes snake oil for often astronomical profit. This presentation will introduce some of the more important myths and discuss the principles that support or undermine them.
