Dr Carol David Daniel, Centre Manager, RFID Centre Limited.

RFID has attracted a lot of media attention in the past year and is tipped to be one of the next “big things” in IT. This presentation aims to provide an overview of RFID technology, what it is, why you would want to use it, how it can be used in industry, the business benefits it can deliver and the implications for IT systems. RFID is well established in many application areas ranging from Ski passes for lift access through to car immobilisers, mass transit ticketing (Oyster card in London) and returnable asset management such as beer kegs, tote boxes, gas cylinders and roll cages. However, to date these applications have essentially been closed loop in which the RFID tags have been reused for many operating cycles in order to amortise their cost. This thinking is now changing and in recent years there has been a shift towards the opportunities for open loop applications, in particular the retail supply chain. This presentation will also provide a brief introduction to the RFID Centre and the RFID technologies and applications that visitors can see demonstrated.
