BCS Hertfordshire Branch is delighted to invite you to our hybrid event, Digital Forensics in Embedded Systems: Challenges and Opportunities, an insightful and highly practical session exploring how digital investigations are evolving beyond traditional computers into the rapidly expanding world of embedded devices.

Whether you’re an IT professional, cybersecurity practitioner, student, investigator, engineer, or simply curious about the hidden evidence in modern devices, this community-focused event offers valuable insights, shared learning, and the opportunity to connect with others interested in digital forensics and cyber investigation.

Join us for an engaging talk with digital forensics specialist Chris Treglohan, followed by optional Q&A and informal discussion. In-person attendees are warmly invited to arrive early for light refreshments and networking with fellow members and guests.

Synopsis

Digital forensics is no longer limited to laptops, desktops, and mobile phones. Increasingly, valuable evidence can be found in smart devices, industrial systems, consumer electronics, and countless other embedded platforms. In this talk, Chris explores the growing role of digital forensics within embedded systems, highlighting both the technical challenges and emerging opportunities for investigators.

We’ll explore:

  • Core forensic principles and how they apply beyond traditional computing environments
  • Embedded Linux systems, constrained architectures, custom firmware, and diverse storage mechanisms
  • Why conventional forensic assumptions often fail in embedded contexts — and how specialists overcome them
  • Practical data extraction techniques, from logical acquisition through to invasive methods
  • Reverse engineering approaches, volatile and non-volatile memory forensics, and the impact of encryption and secure hardware
  • Real-world case studies demonstrating how embedded devices can provide valuable evidence in investigations

Attendees will leave with a clearer understanding of modern forensic challenges, practical investigative techniques, and the expanding evidential value of embedded systems.
