Bad information ruins lives: Fighting the Infodemic
Thursday, 22 April 2021, 7:00pm - 8:00pm
Bad information ruins lives. The World Health Organisation’s Director General has warned:
“We’re not just fighting an epidemic; we’re fighting an infodemic. Fake news spreads faster and more easily than this virus and is just as dangerous.”
Full Fact is on the front line of that fight. The charity’s CEO Will Moy and Data Scientist Alex Joseph will introduce Full Fact’s work and how they are developing automated fact checking tools to help tackle bad information at internet scale.
With partners Africa Check, Chequeado, and the Open Data Institute, won the Google AI for Social Good global Impact Challenge. You can read more about the team’s work on Google’s blog: https://blog.google/outreach-initiatives/google-org/fullfact-and-google-fight-misinformation/
Will Moy is the Chief Executive of Full Fact, the independent charity of fact checkers and anti-misinformation campaigners. Will has led Full Fact’s work since work began in 2008. He has served on advisory groups for the Economic and Social Research Council, Ofcom, the Pew Charitable Trusts, and HM Treasury; and regularly gives evidence to Parliamentary committees and other inquiries.
Before Full Fact, Will worked in the House of Lords for the non-party affiliated peer, Lord Colin Low.
Alex joined Full Fact at the beginning of 2020 to work with the automated fact-checking team in a Data Science role. Alex previously worked in the finance sector for both established corporations and fintech start-ups, before moving into the Defence industry where he worked on AI research projects for the Ministry of Defence.
